Seattle hit full reset this offseason and so far it looks like it has worked out for them. What they lack in dependable production they make up for with upside. Unfortunately this looks like a down year for the Seahawks and that can typically lead to better players getting left on the bench. The Seahawks came away with five 1st round picks in the draft but any 2020 potential might be wasted on a lost season.

Los Angeles was able to lock up their QB long term this offseason but really made few other changes to their roster going into 2020. The AFC West is expected to be weak but the Chargers will likely have a difficult time finding enough wins to keep them out of the bottom of the league. It’s probably time to move on from Myles Garrett before he hits Free Agency and start building the defense around Devin White.

A poor 2019 season, a new GM, and very little 2020 draft capital has New York sending out a similar roster to last season. Expectations can’t be high for this group and that is why it might be time to move on from Matthew Stafford. He is under control for three more seasons but the Giants might be too late in making this team competitive while he’s still around. Besides Stafford, New York has other pieces they might consider selling while they shift their focus to the 2021 Draft.

Atlanta made some questionable moves during the draft, including one that saw them trade away their 1st for this upcoming season. They were able to add plenty of potential to the roster this offseason but the Falcons won’t be able to rely on their rookies to keep them relevant in 2020. It seems unlikely that Atlanta can reacquire their pick without overpaying so the deal to make is probably moving on from an expiring Lavonte David.

It was an uneventful offseason for Denver, too. The Broncos made very few, if any, meaningful changes to the roster and it would be a surprise if they finished this season any differently than they did 2019. Their big FA signing was a kicker and their highest draft pick was a DT. The Broncos will likely benefit most by cutting some of these bad contracts in preparation of the 2021 offseason.

It’ll be tough for Miami to stay competitive in a very strong division, especially with such a weak offense. Foles presents upside if he can hold on to the starting job but there is close to nothing in terms of production from the RB and WR positions. The Dolphins’ defense may carry them to a couple of wins but Miami should be focused on setting up their roster for 2021 and beyond.

Arizona is a longshot for a playoff spot at this point in the year but they have a better chance than the 3 NFC teams ranked behind them. It would take some work, specifically at the LB and S positions, but the Cardinals are only a couple moves away from fighting for the 7th seed in the NFC. If Haskins or JJAW have a big sophomore season, or one one of their rookie WRs breaks out then that will surely put them in a better position for a wild card spot.

Carolina’s big move this offseason was bringing in RB Joe Mixon to help out their group on offense. The duo of Mixon and Wentz will carry a lot of the load for the offense unless RBs Ronald Jones and Damien Harris can take a leap this season. The defense is pretty balanced across the board but there is very little upside and very little depth. An injury to a starting LB or S could really tank this group’s production.

Indy is in a tough spot here. They went all in by trading away their 2020 1st but the competition in the AFC has drastically improved around them. They have a handful of players that could breakout and have a big 2020 season but there is a significant amount of risk that they don’t provide much production either. If Indy wants to cash in on that upside right away then they might want to consider trading away some of these high potential pieces before the season begins. If they are serious about trying to compete in the AFC, though, then they will need to start by acquiring some depth at the WR and LB positions.

Biggest Strength: Defense is high quality and deep

Between a strong defense and a weak divisional schedule, San Francisco should have an opportunity to fight for a wildcard spot in the NFC. The defense has the potential to be elite and there are very few question marks there, if any. Offense is a different story, though. Engram is a solid TE and the WRs should be good enough, but Ryquell Armstead is the only RB on the roster and the QB situation is questionable. Herbert could start at some point in 2020, as well as Alex Smith. But if those starts come too late in the season then it might not make any difference for the 49ers who need that production now.

Green Bay’s offense looks to be solid with all the depth that was added this offseason. It doesn’t seem like it’ll be enough to make up for a lackluster defense but they could find themselves fighting for a playoff spot. If the Packers are serious about contending then they should really consider moving on from some of these QBs. The trio of Brady, Lock, and Trubisky isn’t quite that valuable in a single QB league. Moving one (or two) of them and adding on defense would give this team an improved shot at a playoff spot.

Despite their offseason additions, Cleveland can’t yet be projected for a playoff spot in a very deep AFC. If they are going to make the playoffs they will most likely need to jump one of the other three AFC North teams to grab a wildcard spot. It’s not impossible but consistency from Allen, Woods, and Kupp paired with productive seasons from players like Moss, Miller, and at least one of the TEs will be essential for the Browns to even have a chance at making the playoffs. The defense is improved from 2019 but a lack of depth could cause trouble if anyone is forced to miss time.

After the offseason addition of Ben Roethlisberger, the Lions’ offense is elite. Unfortunately, the defense is an injury to Greenlaw or Walker away from being the worst in the league. If the Lions are going to make the playoffs they are going to need to be willing to trade away offensive pieces to strengthen their defense. As it stands currently, there is very little upside on that side of the ball and it makes it hard to see Detroit going very far this season.

Tampa Bay is currently ranked as the 8th best NFC team so they are projected to finish just outside of a playoff spot as we head into the regular season. Outside of Derrick Henry, and possibly AJ Green, the offense doesn’t offer much upside. If the Bucs want to get back into the playoffs for a 2nd consecutive season it shouldn’t take many moves to get them there, but it’s hard to project the current roster as a playoff contender.

Houston’s ranking is a bit misleading. The roster is both balanced and deep but they have plenty working against them in the 2020 season. Aside from the fact that the AFC is so deep this year, the Texans lack many dependable options. Outside of the WR group, there is a lot of uncertainty about how well the remaining positions can produce. Between players changing teams and players shifting to new roles, it is hard to project how well this team will perform over a full season. This ranking is pretty close to Houston’s floor though, so it shouldn’t be a surprise if they are able to compete with other playoff teams in the AFC.

Dallas is listed as the 7th best team in the NFC and should be one of the favorites for a wildcard spot. The Cowboys are the lowest ranked of the group right now, but they do have some upside with the three top 40 picks they were able to add in this year’s draft. What is worrisome about the Cowboys is the lack of depth on the defensive side of the ball. With no viable backups to fill in, an injury to Dante Fowler Jr or one of the 3 starting LBs could really hurt this team’s production.

Las Vegas is good enough right now to compete for both a playoff spot and a division title. It just doesn’t seem like this roster is one that is motivated to try and do that this season. The offense is quality but the holes on defense haven’t been addressed at all. The Raiders might luck themselves into winning the AFC West but with a couple minor moves to this defense their potential should be higher than that.

#15 -- Washington Football Team

The Washington defense took a pretty big hit losing Hightower, and at this point it is hard to see where production will be coming from on that side of the ball. The offense can very easily carry the Washington Football Team into the postseason, though. Between top 3 options at QB/WR/TE and the potential of both Calvin Ridley and (3) 1st round picks -- Dobbins, Gibson, Ruggs -- this offense is indisputably top tier, and arguably the one with the most upside in the entire league.

The Chiefs could very likely win the AFC West without making any changes to this roster at all. The depth is solid and while there doesn’t appear to be much room for high production, this roster is good enough to win their division. It is tough to see the Chiefs making it out of the wildcard round but with a couple improvements on either side of the ball this team should be a near lock for a playoff spot.

The Ravens’ defense is elite and without blowing that up, it would be hard to see this team falling out of playoff contention. The offense is questionable, though, and without the #1 fantasy QB it may be pushing for one of the worst in the league. If Baltimore is serious about contending, they will need to address the RB/WR/TE positions to get that side of the ball on par with the defense.

#12 -- New York Jets

The good news for New York is that they essentially bring back the entire roster from the 2019 Championship team. Justin Simmons was the biggest loss but a healthy John Johnson should have an opportunity to replace much of that lost production. The defensive side of the ball is solid enough to compete with the top tier teams but the offense isn’t as much of a sure thing. Trading for Daniel Jones pretty much locks down that QB position but no moves were made to reinforce the RB or WR groups. An injury (or holdout) for one of Cook, Carson, or Landry would severely hurt the Jets’ offense.

After missing the playoffs in 2019, the Bears made moves this offseason to shore up holes in their roster. Between signing DeMarcus Lawrence / Chuck Clark and drafting the WR trio of CeeDee Lamb, Bryan Edwards, and Devin Duvernay, Chicago is in a much better position to compete in 2020. The Fournette news does hurt, but Chicago should be a playoff team despite that.

The Vikings are another team bringing back a lot of their 2019 production. They did lose a couple key pieces such as Julian Edelman and De’Vondre Campbell but they did very little to replace them. Minnesota does lack depth but the offense is well balanced and the Vikings will still be rolling out Aaron Donald, Danielle Hunter, Cory Littleton, and Budda Baker on defense. There are question marks but high end production will keep this team competitive all season.

#9 -- Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals are just one of two teams with at last 13 combined wins over the past two seasons and no playoff appearances. This year looks to be the one where they change that, primarily on the backs of a top 5 defense and Russell Wilson. Cincinnati certainly isn’t a sure thing in such a tough conference/division, as they have questions about their depth on the offensive side of the ball. We saw what injuries could do to this offense last year when Tyler Lockett was hurt and the Bengals dropped their final three games to fall out of playoff contention.

Philly faced little competition on their way to the division title in 2019 and while both Dallas and Washington have improved, the Eagles should be the favorites to win it again heading into the 2020 season. The signing of Rob Gronkowski will give Philadelphia a real threat at the position but trading away Cooper Kupp really hurt the WR group. While the additions of Christian Kirk, Michael Pittman, and Antonio Gandy-Golden have potential, it’s hard to see them providing true WR1 numbers like Kupp provided in 2019. Reinforcing WR (and LB) prior to the season should be the Eagles’ top priority.

If the discussion is purely which team has the best starting lineup, then Jacksonville has a legitimate chance at topping that list. There are very few holes in the starting lineup and that is why the Jaguars are a top 10 team. Their lack of depth is concerning though, as an injury to basically any position would leave a hole in the roster. If the entire roster can stay healthy, then they have a good chance of beating this preseason ranking. But perfect health is pretty tough to bank on for an entire season.

Despite the Guice news, Buffalo’s offense still has plenty of potential with their young RBs, WRs, and TE all primed for productive roles. The ceiling on offense should allow them to compete with just about anybody week to week. The defensive side of the ball is more concerning with unproven players in position to play important roles for this defense. The Bills do still have Marlon Humphrey, Robert Quinn, and Harrison Smith but there are question marks for just about every other player outside of new acquisition Jordan Hicks. Regardless of the uncertainty, this team is good enough to make the playoffs and should have an opportunity to compete beyond that.

Looking across the entire roster, there is high end production at most positions. From Thielen, Chark, and Ertz on offense to Clark, Warner, and Walker on defense -- there is a very good floor for the Steelers week to week. What will be interesting to see is how the RBs perform and how Pittsburgh fills their 3rd WR spot. There isn’t much to improve on the defensive end aside from depth behind the starting LBs but the offense could use a couple adjustments prior to the regular season kicking off.

Contrary to popular belief, the Titans’ offense is at the top of the league. Without projecting for players hitting their ceiling, the offense is unquestionably elite but if/when guys like CEH, Taylor, Jeudy, and Marquise Brown break out in 2020 then the Tennessee offense is in a tier of its own. The defensive side of the ball does provide upside, but there aren’t many players who project to make an impact comparable to the players on offense. There are question marks about who will step up at the 2nd DE and S spots, as well as how productive can the LB group really be. Whatever lack of production comes from the defense should be made up by the offense, though.
