I will be honest, I'm not sure why this rule was added last offseason. I know many of you don;t even use it anyway but it seemed like it was pretty randomly added last summer. I'm fine with the concept but the minimum of 20% for each season is far too low. An example of the current rule would be:
I offer/sign John Brown for 2 years at $12M per season ($24M total), I could split up the contract in any of the following way:
$4.8M / $19.2M or vice versa as long as one year is at least 20% of the total contract
Here's an example for each of the three options using that same contract:
Option 1: 40%
John Brown's contract could be split up $9.6M / $14.4M
Option 2: 45%
John Brown's contract could be split up $10.8M / $13.2M
Option 3: No %, Normal Bidding
John Brown's contract would just be $12M / $12M
*** In my opinion, we should just do without this. Adding a rookie scale means that all of our contracts will be uniform, nothing would be backloaded/frontloaded, increasing/decreasing. At 40% there is still an unreasonable gap that I could see being abused, and at 45% there is very little use for having restructuring anyway (again, not sure why it was added). I think the addition of scaled rookie deals should go hand in hand with the removal of this season but I will leave it up to you all to decide.
