Option One: No extension would mean no change in the rules. Each team would only have a Franchise Tag to use on any expiring player they wanted each offseason. It would help FA pool but hurt a team's ability to keep their best players.
Option Two: Every team will get one extension per offseason to use on any player they want, as long as they have at least 1 year remaining on their contracts. The max contract for anyone who gets extended would be 3 years. This would help teams retain more players but hurt FA as a whole.
Option Three: A team can use an extension every three seasons but would have a max of 5 years per extension. Can only be used on players that have 1 year remaining, so that contracts can't exceed more than 6 years. It is a compromise between the two as it will help more players become FAs but also almost guarantee that teams can keep their top 1-2 players from hitting FA at any point.
*Any player who has been Franchised cannot be extended
*A player can be extended ONCE -- this is to avoid drowning out FA by having teams keep cycling extensions through their 3 best players forever (After 1 extensions, they can be tagged up to 3 times or released to FA)
*Players on an RFA contract can be extended, but will lose RFA status if so
*If Option 2 or 3 is chosen, OWNERS WILL BE ABLE TO USE ONE EXTENSION THIS OFFSEASON
If Options 2 or 3 are selected, the following extension prices will be used:
QB - 8M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 8M.
RB - 6M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 6M.
WR - 6M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 6M.
TE - 5M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 5M.
K - 3M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 3M.
LB - 5M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 5M.
DE - 4M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 4M.
DT - 3M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 3M.
CB - 3M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 3M.
S - 4M per year or 150% of last year of previous contract if over 4M.
